PowerXCell™ 8i is a next generation processor based on Cell Brоadband Engine™ Architecture. The PowerXCell™ 8i processor has 9 cores: one PowerPC core, called Power Processor Element (PPE), and 8 processing cores – Synergistic Processor Elements (SPE). PPE and SPE cores have different functionality in the system – such a design allowed to boost chip performance while keeping energy consumption low.
